How to Do Emojis on a Computer: Windows and Mac Shortcuts

    July 25, 2026

Emojis have become second nature on phones, but many people aren’t aware that both Windows and Mac computers have a built-in emoji picker too, accessible with a simple keyboard shortcut. No need for a browser extension or copying and pasting from a website — here’s how to insert emojis directly while typing on a computer.

How to Type Emojis on Windows

Windows has included a built-in emoji panel since Windows 10, and it works in virtually any application where you can type text, including word processors, browsers, and messaging apps.

Click into any text field where you want to insert an emoji.

Press the Windows key + . (period) or Windows key + ; (semicolon) — both shortcuts open the same emoji panel.

A small window will pop up showing categories of emojis, along with GIFs and symbols in some versions of Windows.

Use the search bar at the top of the panel to quickly find a specific emoji by typing a keyword, such as “heart” or “laughing.”

Click the emoji you want, and it will be inserted directly at your cursor position.

The panel remembers your recently used emojis, making it quick to reuse your favourites without searching each time.

How to Type Emojis on Mac

macOS has a similarly straightforward built-in emoji picker, accessible from almost any app where you’re typing text.

Click into any text field where you want to add an emoji.

Press Control + Command + Spacebar to open the Character Viewer.

This opens a small emoji panel where you can browse categories or use the search bar at the top to find a specific emoji.

Double-click an emoji, or click once and press Return, to insert it into your text.

Like Windows, macOS keeps track of frequently and recently used emojis for quicker access on subsequent uses.

    Using Emojis in Browsers

Since the Windows and Mac emoji shortcuts work at the operating system level, they’ll work inside your web browser too — whether you’re typing in an email, a social media post, or a comment box. Simply click into the text field first, then use the same shortcut (Windows key + period, or Control + Command + Spacebar on Mac) to bring up the picker.

    Alternative Ways to Add Emojis

If the built-in shortcuts aren’t working for you, or you’re using an application that doesn’t support them well, there are a few alternative approaches:

    • Copy and paste: Many websites host searchable emoji libraries you can copy from and paste directly into your document or message.
    • Emoji codes in specific apps: Some messaging platforms and apps support typing a colon followed by a keyword (like ``), which then autocompletes into the matching emoji.
    • On-screen keyboard: Windows also includes a touch keyboard with an emoji tab, accessible from the taskbar, which can serve as an alternative if the standard shortcut isn’t responding.

    Troubleshooting: Shortcut Not Working?

If the emoji shortcut doesn’t seem to do anything, check that your cursor is actively placed inside a text field before pressing the keys, as the shortcut typically won’t trigger otherwise. On Windows, ensure your keyboard layout and region settings support the emoji panel, as some configurations can affect availability. On a Mac, check that no other application or system shortcut has been reassigned to the same key combination, which can occasionally prevent the Character Viewer from opening.

    Final Thoughts

Adding emojis on a computer is just as easy as on a phone once you know the shortcut — Windows key + period on Windows, or Control + Command + Spacebar on a Mac. Both built-in pickers include a handy search function, so you can quickly find exactly the emoji you’re after without scrolling through long lists, making it simple to add a bit of personality to your me
